Vasquez Rocks Hike - All Dens Welcome 10/26

We will be hiking around the famous Vasquez Rocks (used in many many Movie/TV productions) in Aqua Dulce. This hike will earn the boys their Vasquez Rock Geologic Hike patch as well as fulfill some requirements for the Jungle Book Award - Kaa Segment. It also can count towards regular achievements and electives such as Buddy System Requirements, Hike with your Den/Pack, and practicing Leave No Trace guidelines.

Wednesday, October 26th (minimum day)
Meet at Vasquez Rocks @ 2:30pm

Directions:
Take 138 West through Littlerock and Pearblossom. Make the slight left onto Pearblossom Hwy. This will turn into Sierra Hwy. Take this to the 14 freeway. Enter the 14S and continue about 11 miles and exit on Escondido Canyon Rd. You’ll make a left off the ramp and a right onto Escondido Canyon Rd. The entrance is at 10700 Escondido Canyon Rd. It’s on the left and there should be a sign for Vasquez Rocks. Once you get into the park, make a left onto the main dirt road and follow it to the large open parking area.
Parking:
We're going to meet at the larger parking lot in the center of the park because parking areas at the entrance are pretty small. We'll then hike along the history trail back toward the entrance and catch the geology trail on our way back up the PCT to our starting point. Parking is free and doesn't require any kind of pass. There are chemical toilets in the parking area.
Uniform/What to Bring:Please wear your Class B Scout Shirt (green t-shirt) or Uniform Shirt, snacks, water, a jacket, paper & pencil. The hike should only be about 1.5 miles so there will be plenty of time to play on the rocks and explore. The hike should last at least 2 hours.
Award Requirements:The boys need to learn about the geologic information of Vasquez Rocks and the San Andreas Fault. Please make sure you study the handouts at the park or research information before you visit. The kids are supposed to take notes and pictures along the way as well so that each den can make a den report to submit with the award application.

What is JOTA?
When Scouts want to meet young people from another country, they usually think of attending a World Jamboree. But few people realize that each year more than 400,000 Scouts and Guides “get together” over the airwaves for the annual Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). Modern technology offers Scouts the exciting opportunity to make friends in other countries without leaving home.
JOTA is an annual event in which Boy and Girl Scouts and Guides from all over the world speak to each other by means of Amateur (ham) Radio. Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared via radio waves. Since 1958 when the first Jamboree-on-the-Air was held, millions of Scouts have met each other through this event. Many contacts made during JOTA have resulted in pen pals and links between Scout troops that have lasted many years.
With no restrictions on age or on the number of participants, and at little or no expense, JOTA allows Scouts to contact each other by ham radio. The radio stations are operated by licensed amateur radio operators. Many Scouts and leaders hold licenses and have their own stations, but the majority participate in JOTA through stations operated by local radio clubs and individual radio amateurs.

Bottle Rocket Kick Off Event

Mark your calendars for Sunday August 28th, 3:00-5:00pm--Bottle Rocket/Cub Scout Kick-off Event at the Methodist Camp (top of Elm Street).

New Scouts can register (invite your friends who may want to join--there's a Recruiting Patch!), we will be Swimming (weather permitting), and launching 2-liter Bottle Rockets!

To construct a 2-liter bottle rocket, just decorate an empty 2-liter soda bottle, remembering to leave the top open (where the cap goes). If you want a nose-cone on your bottle, you need to attach it to the bottom of the bottle.
The Pack will provide Lemonade to drink, you can also bring Potluck Snacks, if you like, and we are in need of Drinking Cups if you have some to donate.

This is always a favorite event with the boys--Hope to see you all there!
